Lyrics

Summertime
George Gershwin / Ira Gershwin / DuBose Heyward / Dorothy Hayward

Mike Downes, bass
Mark McLean, cardboard box/brushes

Summertime and the living is easy
Fish are jumping and the cotton so high
Your daddy's rich
And your mama's good-looking
So hush little baby don't you cry

Cause one of these mornings
You're gonna rise up singing
And you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky
But till that morning
There's nothing, nothing can harm you
With daddy and mammy standing by

I MUST HAVE LEFT MY HEART
Marc Jordan / Steve MacKinnon

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, alto sax
Andrew Craig, piano
Mark McLean, drums

Tonight was black and blue
This overcoat won't do
It's falling all apart
When I left you
I must have left my heart

The walls are tumbling
My feet are stumbling
I'm all alone in the dark
When I left you
I must have left my heart

Must I always be lonely?
With my dreams at your doorway
Just one more empty dog day
Afternoon

Shall I run to your door?
And stay forever more
I don't know where to start
When I left you
I must have left my heart

Melody
Craig Ross / Molly Johnson
arranged by The Quartet

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, flute/background vocals
Andrew Craig, piano/Rhodes/ background vocals
Mark McLean, drums

It's so easy here with you
Like a walk in the park
Just before dark
Oh it's so easy here with you
Like sun on my face
A bright summer dayYou're like a melody
That follows me
And when you go I still hear music constantly
You're like a melody
That follows me
And when you go you're haunting me
You're taunting meAnd summer slips to fall, yes it does
Seems no times past at all, no time at all
And summer slips to fall and then it snows
And then I watch you go, watch you go

You're like a melody
That follows me
And when you go I still hear music constantly
You're like a melody
That follows me
And when you go you're haunting me
You're taunting me

Got a feeling 'bout you
Might be nothing new
But time slips by so easily
I hardly try
So don't be sad
I won’t be blue
Cause love will follow, follow you

Sweet Sublime
Mike Downes / Andrew Craig

arranged by M. Downes / A. Craig

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, soprano sax
Andrew Craig, piano/b3
Mark McLean, drums

Light spills in tangled hues
yielding my first glimpse of you
Your face recites to me
verses of wordless poetry
not in my greatest mind
Had I foreseen your smile

I feel a rush of fear
doubting true love found me here.
Your hand extends to me
rescue from doubt's churning sea.
Slowly love's flower blooms
Joy's tears flow like sweet vermouth
Your love's the sweet sublime
My heart has longed for all this timeI feel a rush of fear
Doubting true love found me here
Slowly love's flower blooms
Joy's tears flow like sweet vermouth
Your love's the sweet sublime
Your love's the sweet sublime
Your love's the sweet sublime
My heart has longed for all this time
All this time

He's Got My Heart
Andrew Craig

Mike Downes, bass
Andrew Craig, piano/b3
Mark McLean, drums/shaker

If you could see where I was comin'
You would know I'm not a'dreamin'
'Cause I know that I have got it all
All it takes to have him
If only I could make him see
If I was he and he was me
The feeling in his gentle pleas
Would make me see things differently
One thing that's sure to me
He's got my heart

Please don't you tell me that my foolishness
Is what's gonna do me in
'Cause for him to go away from me
My life will have been
The greatest ship of sympathy
Unbounded hope and charity
To ever sail the sea of love
To only end in tragedy
One thing I plainly see
He's got my heartAnd so I never ever wanna be
A queen with no king for her queendom
'Cause for him to be my only one
Is my life's true freedom
If only I could make him see
If I was he and he was me
The feeling in his gentle pleas
Would make me see things differently
One thing that's sure to me
He's got my heart

Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)
Quincy Jones / Rod Temperton / Lionel Richie

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, clarinet
Andrew Craig, piano
Mark McLean, drums/wood block

Sister, you've been on my mind
Oh sister, we're two of a kind
So sister, I'm keeping my eyes on you
I bet you think I don't know nothing
But singing the blues
Oh sister, have I got news for you
I'm something
I hope you think that you're something tooOh scuffling, I been up that lonesome road
And I seen a lot of suns going down
Oh but trust me
Now low life's gonna run me around
So let me tell you something, sister
Remember you name
No twister, gonna steal your stuff away
My sister
We shore ain't got a whole lot of time
So shake you shimmy Sister
Cause honey, Miss Molly is feeling fine

Red Cardinal
Steven MacKinnon

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, clarinet
Andrew Craig, piano
Mark McLean, drums/tambourine/cowbells/wood blocks

Red cardinal way up on the wire
Little bird you caught my eye
Turn my head the way you sing
Out of reach of everything
I would surely be remiss
If I did not ask you this
What's it like to be up there?
To live your life without a care

Red cardinal what a curious sight
Wish I may and come what might
Something must have sent you here
Cause outta nowhere you appear
Is it easy there for you
And could you tell me what you do?
When rainy days prove you wrong
Do you still sing your scarlet song?

Red cardinal if it's all the same
Please allow me to explain
Goodbye blackbird, so long crow
Red cardinal, I love you so

Red cardinal high up on a wire
Little bird you bring a smile
No one here but you and me
Little one you look so free
If I could I’d fly so high
Cover every inch of sky
Over here and over there
On a wing and on a prayer

Red cardinal what more can I say
Come to me another day
Goodbye blackbird, so long crow
Red cardinal, I love you so
Red cardinal, I love you so
Red cardinal, I love you so
Red cardinal, I love you so

SLEEP IN LATE
Dave Wall

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, tenor sax
Andrew Craig, piano
Mark McLean, drums

I ain't got nothin' on my plate
Please let me sleep in late
No codfish biting at my bait
Please let me sleep in late
Feel like I'm standin' at St. Peter's gate
Please let me sleep in late
Don't know the time,
I don't know the date
Please let me sleep in late

Gonna lay right down here,
in my cozy bed
You know I might be dreaming
I might be dead
Don't have to worry 'bout gaining weight
Please let me sleep in late
I ain't got time for love and hate
Please let me sleep in late

For when the sun begins to rise
I don't wanna see it through my tired eyes
Don't have to worry 'bout gaining weight
Please let me sleep in late
I ain't got nothin' on my plate
Please let me sleep in late
Don't know the time, I don’t know the date
Please let me sleep in late

Haunted
Mike Downes

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, tenor sax
Andrew Craig, piano
Mark McLean, drums

Haunted by your memory
I find myself lost in reverie
A shadow has swept across my heart
Ever since we've been apart

Haunted by your words to me
Spoken soft and tenderly
Lately I hear you in my sleep
Fading as you drift away

I can feel the first time
You held me in your arms
That moment was a lifetime
The world stood still but now...

I'm haunted by the thought of you
I'm lost and wondering what to do
You left me without a reason why
And all you whispered was goodbye
And now I'm left to wonder
Are you haunted, like I'm haunted by you?

Another Day
Mark McLean / Molly Johnson

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, soprano sax/background vocals
Ardrew Craig, piano/B3/background vocals
Mark McLean, drums/tambourine/bongos/vibraslap

I got to get up out my bed
I've got to get up on my feet
I hear these voices in my head
They echo voices in the street
Got to get myself together
Gotta give myself a break
Nothing seems to last forever
'cept this very fast paceThen the sun will come up on another day.I've learned the fine art of pacing
Take a walk about the room
I can take a bit of waiting
I can sing all out of tune
And then your mind plays tricks
and you know you're all alone
And then you start to feel that itch
And then you know you should stay homeThen the sun will come up on another day.
Yeah the sun will come up on another day.
Oh the sun will come up...on just another day.Cause in the darkness of night
It's just a funny little itch
When the moon's shining bright
I feel a certain kind of twitch
Now I'm feeling crazy crazy crazy
But I'm all right
Things kinda get hazy, hazy, hazy baby
But I'm not up tightCause then the sun will come up on another day.
Cause then the sun will come up on another day. Then the sun will come up on another day.
Yeah the sun will come up on another day.
Oh the sun will come up... on just another day.

Ooh Child/Redemption Song (A duet with Andrew Craig)
Stan Vincent / Bob Marley
arranged by Mark McLean / Andrew Craig

Mike Downes, bass
Colleen Allen, alto sax/background vocals
Andrew Craig, piano b3/vocals
Mark McLean, drums

Ooo child, things are gonna get easier.
Ooo child, things’ll get brighter.
Ooo child, things are gonna get easier.
Ooo child, things’ll get brighter.Old Pirates yes they rob
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I from the
Bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the Almighty
We forward in this generation triumphantly.
(All I ever had is songs of freedom).Someday ya. We'll put it together and we’ll get it undone.
Someday when you're head is much lighter.
Someday ya. We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun.
Someday when the world is much brighter.Won’t you help to sing, these songs of freedom.
All I ever had. Redemption songs
Won’t you help to sing, these songs of freedom
All I ever had. Redemption songsOoo child, things are gonna be easier. (Redemption song)
Ooo child, things'll be brighter. (Won’t you help to sing)
Ooo child, things are gonna be easier. (Redemption song)
Ooo child, things'll be brighter.Won’t you help me sing, these songs of freedom,
Cause all I ever had. Redemption songs
Won’t you help me sing, these songs of freedom,
Cause all I ever had. Redemption songsSomeday ya. We'll put it together and we’ll get it undone.
Someday when you're head is much lighter.
Someday ya. We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun.
Someday when the world is much brighter.Someday ya. We'll put it together and well get it undone.
Someday when your head is much lighter.
Someday ya. We'll walk in the rays of a beautiful sun.
Someday when the world is much brighter.

When the world is much brighter
It’s gonna be brighter

Press

"One of Toronto's best-kept jazz secrets...she is a proud Canadian who looks for original songs, vehicles for adult emotions... It's the individual timbre of her voice that elevates them." - Evening Standard, London UK

Molly Johnson rocked theToronto Downtown Jazz Festival. ... the singer was audacious, the applause boisterous and history was made. Johnson became the first Canadian female vocalist in the festival's 17-year-history to sell out a show on the mainstage.
- Toronto Star

"Once again, Johnson's warm, liquid voice lovingly embraces each song." - Toronto Sun

"Molly Johnson has followed up her excellent self-titled CD of two years ago with another of understated elegance." - Windsor Star

"Local heroine Molly Johnson is in great form on this disc...with her rich blend of blues and jazz confidently displayed. Flashes of Dinah Washington, Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday (whose "Don't Explain" is a treat here) colour the naturally warm textures of her voice...She's full of drama wit and heartache... surely one of the records of the year." - Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star

"A lovely voice, and the elegant arrangements give room for her to stretch it…" eye Weekly (Toronto)

"Instantly Appealing" North Toronto Post

"Johnson's singing is smooth, and soothing in a way, and her distinctive voice keeps you going back for more."
- Winnipeg Free Press

"Johnson transfixed the sold-out crowd… with a simple, powerful musical recital."
Winnipeg Sun

"Johnson leads a snappy lounge-lizard combo through an esoteric set of swank classics ("Summertime"), inspired pop covers…, and torchy tuneful originals (the perfectly titled "Sweet Sublime") that hold their own against the competition."
- Winnipeg Sun
