Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise. Leadership is Key

World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people, with an estimated 38.6 million people living with HIV, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 3.1 million (between 2.8 and 3.6 million) lives in 2005, of which more than half a million (570,000) were children. The concept of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then, it has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world.

Give A Day 2007
Molly will be supporting Give a Day by making a donation, and she encourages others to recognize Word AIDS Day by talking about the pandemic, organizing a campaign in their workplace, school, church etc., and considering making a donation that would be great.

Give a Day to World AIDS proposes that we recognize World AIDS Day by giving one day’s pay to organizations that will use the money well in the fight against AIDS. It was started by a doctor in Markham and is spreading across the country – last year raising over $500,000.

The idea is simple: workplace campaigns are organized through the fall where people talk to their colleagues about the pandemic, sharing information and books, watching movies at lunch hours, distributing information about the impact of AIDS on families and communities  – and generally getting as many people as possible to think about the pandemic. They commit to giving a day’s pay – or as close as they are able – and on or before December 1st, they send their donations to an organization that will use their money well.

The movement has grown quickly and has tremendous momentum. From one hospital in 2004 to dozens of workplaces last year in 2006. This year we have sponsorship support from 10 law firms and businesses in producing materials and getting them out as many Canadians as possible.

Give a Day is a unique approach and one I think you will appreciate:

  • Instead of building a new organization, it encourages donations be made to existing Canadian organizations that are doing good work with low administrative costs.

  • It proposes recognizing World AIDS Day in a meaningful way - on that day you work for others; people facing the greatest humanitarian crisis ever.

  • Give a Day works because people talk to each other – because they share their passion for change and work together.

With the help of many musical friends and  generous supporters from the arts & business communities, they helped raise thousands of dollars for people living with HIV. The work is not done, and so, Kumbaya continues...
