Two of Canada’s most celebrated voices come together as Molly Johnson and Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo release a powerful new interpretation of The Tragically Hip’s “Long Time Running,” available everywhere now via Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company.

Originally released on February 19, 1991, the song remains a cornerstone of the Canadian musical canon. Thirty-five years later, Johnson and Cuddy revisit the beloved anthem with a rendition that is intimate, soulful and deeply reverent, honouring its legacy while revealing new emotional depth.

Recorded at Blue Rodeo’s Woodshed Studio, the single brings together Johnson’s long-time trio — Davide Di Renzo (drums), Mike Downes (bass) and Robi Botos (piano) — along with special guest Jimmy Bowskill on guitar. The track was engineered by Tim Vesely, mixed by John “Beetle” Bailey, and produced by Davide Di Renzo.

Johnson’s unmistakable voice, soulful and commanding, moves through the song’s timeless lyrics with grace and clarity. Cuddy’s harmonies anchor the track in a shared Canadian lineage. The result is a collaboration that feels both historic and personal, a meeting of artists who have each helped define the country’s musical identity, and a heartfelt tribute to the enduring legacy of The Tragically Hip and frontman Gord Downie.

About the new release, Molly Johnson says, “This has been a long time coming. I’ve always wanted to record a duet with Jim. We’ve been friends for years, so to finally collaborate on a song by our beloved The Tragically Hip feels like real magic.”
